My comments are still busted but I’m going to carry on regardless.
Last week I told you of my plan to wake up early and use the quiet hours to get some work done at a time when I can concentrate, i.e. when I’m not disturbed by the hubbub of daily life.

The first week hasn’t been a riotous success. It’s been a pretty mixed bag really.
One evening I got to bed at 10pm and set my alarm for 4am. I woke at 1am and got up. I worked through to 4.30am and couldn’t keep my eyes open so I went back to bed until 7am. Not great.
The next day I got to bed at 8.30pm and didn’t get up until 6.30am – I slept too long and that made me feel lazy.
On Sunday morning I slept through until 7.30am which is outrageous because all the children were wide awake and chattering away (for chattering, read fighting).
I managed a 5am start and also a 5.30am start but I didn’t feel I had enough time to take the benefit from it.
Before my comments section broke, I saw one from Mark McClure, who directed me to a post on Steve Pavlina’s blog. I didn’t manage to save the link and I can’t even access the comment through the admin panel, so I just read all of Steve’s articles on ‘rising early’.
Based on what I’d read, last night (Sunday night) I went to bed at 8.30pm, set my alarm for 4am and fell asleep around 9pm.
I had a bad night dealing with the children who were waking for various reasons including needing the toilet and nightmares….. and maybe nightmares about needing the toilet?
At 3.55am I woke up without prompt, swung my feet onto the carpet and started my day. I wasn’t going to allow the bad night to keep me from starting a new week on the best terms. And what a productive day I’ve had! It’s been great.
Principal amongst the achievements, I managed to exercise and write about it.
What made it even sweeter is that I had time to make scrambled eggs for my breakfast.
An added bonus was that there was no morning rush to get the children ready for school. It was just calm bliss.
I don’t know how the rest of the week will pan out but I’m declaring 4am as my non-negotiable getting up time. Well OK, everything’s negotiable, but I’d like to get into the habit of waking at this time everyday and see how much faster I can press ahead with my plans to take over the world.
Only kidding. I’ll happily settle for taking over just my life at the moment.
I’ll let you know when the comments are back up and running but while they’re offline maybe you’d prefer to catch my posts through free updates in your feed reader. Free!
